Beautiful Bathrooms – Part 1

by Creative Style Interiors

The bathroom has become much more than a place to bathe… it’s now a sanctuary of relaxation. Your bathroom is a very personal space where, if you’re anything like us, you spend a fair amount of time, so the design should be functional to your needs, and look beautiful at the same time.

Just as any other room in your home, your bathroom can have a particular design style, depending on the effect you want to achieve. The design & the look of your bathroom will be influenced by who will be using it most. A master bathroom should always be the one that most reflects your personality and taste, as it’s you (and your partner/spouse) using it. The family bathroom needs to be practical for children and guests, but still suit your design style. As the powder room is the ‘public’ bathroom used by friends, family and guests, it can be a real showpiece.

A typical contemporary bathroom is all about neutrals and simple, clean lines. Tapware and fittings follow suit. Finishes include matt, satin & gloss in materials such as 2 pac polyurethane, metals, stone and laminates with a striated timber look. The current trend is to lay rectangular tiles horizontally on the wall to extend the lines of the bathroom. However, if you have low ceilings, vertical wall tiles are still the best option. Colours can be incorporated into a contemporary style bathroom through towels, toiletries and accessories- pops of bright colour can look really cool.

A luxe bathroom is a lavish retreat with plenty of details and a classic feel. Choose polished stone or porcelain tiles to mimic stone. Feature tiles are often mosaic or classic patterns such as damask and scrolls. Chrome tapware is best for a luxe bathroom as bright gold is generally a big no-no. As with a contemporary bathroom, you can add colour to a luxe bathroom, however bold colours look out of place.

Zen bathrooms draw inspiration from Asian and Scandinavian design styles, featuring light neutrals or white combined with pale timber. Much like with modern style, zen bathrooms feature clean lines but with a more laid-back feel. Tapware and other fittings can be chrome or brushed stainless steel, with natural & honed stone tiles (or ceramic to mimic stone). Be sure to include luxurious fluffy white towels in a zen bathroom! If you’re going to add colour to your zen bathroom, stick to nature’s hues of blues, greens and browns.

A romantic style bathroom is a continuation of the ‘boudoir’- Think rich, sumptuous, dark and moody, using neutrals as a base. This is a style that works really well in master bathrooms. Stone & tiles should be polished, with mirrored finishes on cabinetry, and chrome, pewter or matt black tapware and fixtures. If you’re not tiling all the walls, wallpaper with a lustrous finish is perfect. For colours, think intense burgundies, teals and luscious purples in towels and accessories.

Thanks Alison. Yes bathrooms are almost unrecognisable on what they were!
