Bedheads & Bedframes for your Boudoir – Part 1

by Creative Style Interiors

There’s nothing more luxurious than a beautifully dressed bed all year round. Particularly in cooler weather, our beds can be a refuge of warmth while we listen to the wind and rain outside. But your bed doesn’t have to be purely functional… It is also the best way to inject personality into your bedroom décor and create a design feature to reflect your personal style.

That being said, it’s important that you put plenty of time and effort into finding your perfect mattress, as they are definitely not all created equal. The right mattress will ensure you have the best night’s sleep possible, and are well supported throughout the night from head to toe.

It’s worth investing in the best quality mattress you can afford. The better the materials and construction, the longer it will last while still giving you sweet dreams. Ignore recommendations from friends and try mattresses for yourself, as everyone’s back is different and there’s no ‘one size fits all’ option.

At this time, you’ll need to decide if you want to purchase it as an ensemble (mattress and upholstered base) or look for a frame base and separate mattress. You will also need to decide on the design style for your bedroom, because it will influence the choices you make on finishes, shapes and linen. For example, a contemporary bedroom will often feature a lower bed with sleek lines, while a classic bedroom will include a higher bed and more ‘plush’ details.

If you’ve decided to buy a frame for your bed, there are plenty of options including fully upholstered, timber and steel in a seemingly limitless number of styles to suit any décor. Many retailers will offer a selection of fabrics, stains and colours for you to ‘customise’ your bed frame, but for a truly personal touch, you can’t go past a custom designed frame.

For an ensemble, you might like to install a bedhead to add your own decorative touch to the bed. These can be custom made from an upholsterer. They come in any size or shape (square, pointed, peaked, arched, with returns, etc.) The height should always be proportionate to the size of the mattress, which means you will need a taller bedhead for a pillow-topped or king sized mattress. Fully upholstered bedheads are the current trend, with details such as diamond or square tufting, studwork and piping being extremely popular features. Your choice of fabric can impact your design style. For example, a contemporary fabric can modernise a diamond tuft.

TIP: If you don’t want the commitment of a bedhead or frame, try using European pillows to add height and decoration to your bed. Like any other cushion, these can be changed regularly to update your décor quickly and inexpensively. Euro pillows are also fabulous for back support if you like to sit in bed and read.
